Different Ways to Make Money Without a Degree
A college degree often gets you into the job market quickly, but it’s certainly not the only way to earn money. In fact, some of the most successful people in the world didn’t attend or graduate from college! You can find employment at virtually any age, and there are many ways to make money without a degree – if you’re willing to work hard and get creative with your job search, that is! This guide will cover the most popular and effective ways to make money without having a college degree.
Volunteer
One of the best ways to make money without a degree is by helping others. Volunteering can be as simple as passing out flyers or picking up trash, but it’s also a way for you to meet people who can put you in touch with local organizations that need your skills. And volunteering at an organization that represents your interests and values—such as improving sustainability or encouraging more women in STEM fields—can be even more rewarding than cash.
Freelance Writing
Writers with no degree can make money writing. While you won’t earn a traditional salary, you can earn an income by pitching articles to magazines, newspapers and websites. Freelance writing isn’t right for everyone; it takes persistence and hard work to find gigs and advance your career. Still, it could be an option if you want to make money without having to enroll in classes or get certified—especially if your writing skills are strong. If freelance writing interests you, read our guide on how much money freelance writers make or check out Freelance Writing Gigs‘ list of sample rates (based on experience) by field.
Freelance Web Design
Web design is always in demand, especially since many employers aren’t willing to shell out big bucks for designers. If you can design appealing websites, you can make money hand over fist. A lot of freelance sites are looking for part-time help if you don’t want a full-time job; some even pay well. Starting with places like Elance or Fiverr will give you experience, but at some point, it might be worth reaching out directly to local businesses and offering your services as an expert in one area or another.
Work at Home Online
If you have a computer and an Internet connection, you can work from home online. As long as you’re willing to commit to the time required for these jobs, there’s no limit on how much money you can make from working at home online. Two of my favorite sites for finding remote opportunities are FlexJobs and Virtual Vocations . Both of these sites offer solid lists of high-paying telecommuting jobs that also don’t require previous experience. Just be sure to read through their requirements carefully so that you know what’s expected of your work once you get hired. There are even career fairs available where employers meet with potential employees in person! Check out my post on virtual career fairs if you want some more information on that topic.
Become an Online Tutor
Taking online courses (or offline courses, for that matter) is a great way to gain relevant skills and knowledge. In fact, many companies are actively seeking out candidates with experience teaching—both for online classes and traditional ones. Why? It’s because skilled teachers have well-developed communication skills, which means they’re able to effectively articulate technical concepts in an easily digestible way. Translation: This is valuable information for pretty much any company that sells software or services. Teaching might not be your primary job—but it could be an excellent part-time gig while you’re learning how to start a business.
Sell Products or Services Online
As you start learning how to start your own business, I highly recommend getting your feet wet by selling products and services online. There are two main benefits here: 1) it’s much easier to get started than you think, and 2) it’s how most people actually make money when they’re starting out. Also, don’t worry about coming up with something original – just focus on offering information or a service that is of value to others.
Drop Shipping and Wholesale
Another way that you can make money without a degree is through drop shipping and wholesale. This method doesn’t require any upfront cash, so it’s easy for beginners who don’t have thousands of dollars laying around. By building up an online business that allows you to sell merchandise online, then sourcing products from manufacturers in China (or wherever they may be), you can begin selling products without ever having made an initial investment. As your business grows, so will your inventory and income potential.
Start Your Own Business
One of the best ways to earn money without a degree is to start your own business. Many founders have never earned a college degree, but that doesn’t mean they lack talent and ambition. Take Bill Gates for example: Microsoft’s founder didn’t finish his studies, but he still became one of the most successful entrepreneurs in history. Working for yourself may not be easy – it takes drive and determination – but it can be incredibly rewarding and there are few experiences that will teach you more about business than starting your own company. You don’t need formal qualifications or extensive experience; if you believe in yourself, you can make it happen.
