Origins of Rare Pepe
Pepe the Frog is a cartoon character created by artist Matt Furie in 2005. Pepe started out as a harmless meme, often used to convey feelings of sadness or disappointment. However, over time, Pepe’s image was co-opted by the alt-right movement and became associated with white supremacy and hate speech.
In response to this, a group of online activists known as “the Cult of the Rare Pepes” started creating their own versions of Pepe, with the intention of reclaiming the character from the alt-right.
